A Month to Celebrate

May was full of milestones, music, softball, pool tournaments, and summer travel plans as our family wrapped up the school year and looked ahead to a busy season.

Graduations

May has been a month full of graduations for our family, but none more meaningful than Jessica graduating from UNLV with her master’s degree in special education. She has worked incredibly hard over the past two years, earned excellent grades, and did it all while balancing work, including her first year as a full-time teacher, and home life. Her dedication has set an example for the kids of what is possible when you set a goal and refuse to give up on it.

To celebrate Jessica’s achievement, Amy and Tom flew out from Colorado, and Rick and Debbie flew out from Iowa to join us for a weekend full of ceremonies, meals, school performances, games, and more. My mom also joined us for Jessica’s graduation ceremony and the dinner afterward. It’s not often that we’re able to get all of our parents together at one time, so this was a special occasion that we don’t take for granted. It wouldn’t have happened without Jessica’s hard work and dedication, and we are all so proud of her.

There were a couple of other graduations to celebrate this month as well. First, Ava graduated from middle school and is now getting ready for her freshman year of high school. I remember Ava’s first day of middle school like it was yesterday. We rode bikes to school together, and I took her photo outside before she headed in. She was still a little girl at that time, but now she has grown into an incredible young woman who Jess and I are so proud of. Middle school was not always the easiest experience for her, but during that time she made new friends, found teachers she connected with, started playing the trumpet, made significant academic progress, and became quite the softball player. There has been a lot of good throughout this chapter of her life, and I can’t wait to see what comes next as she transitions to high school.

The final graduation for us this month was Enzo’s graduation from elementary school. This was his fourth year at Vanderburg Elementary, and all four of those years were spent there with Jess. Now she’ll be driving to and from school alone each day, which is a little sad, but we’re also excited to see Enzo move on to middle school. He did great in elementary school and has a solid core group of friends to lean on as they take this next step together. I had the pleasure of attending his graduation ceremony last week, which included a heartwarming speech about Jessica from one of her students. The tradition at this school is to take your child out to lunch after the ceremony, then bring them back for a party at school. Enzo’s request for lunch was one of our favorite sushi restaurants, so Jess and I were happy to oblige.

The Vanderburg Spring 2026 Concert

A couple of months ago, the music teacher at Vanderburg asked Jess if she thought I’d be interested in playing the ukulele on one song during the spring concert. She knew I had been playing guitar for a long time and figured I could handle it. Without even listening to the song, I agreed to do it, even though I had never played a ukulele before. I figured it was a simple instrument and that it would be no problem.

Soon after, Jess brought a uke home for me to practice with. At that point, I didn’t know any chords or even how to tune it. After listening to the song I needed to learn, it became obvious why they wanted to bring someone else in to perform it. Most ukulele songs have four to six chords in the entire song. This one had 20! It was far more complicated than I expected and took me a few weeks to learn. I had plenty of time, though, and everything turned out fine.

In addition to practicing at home, I went to the school a few times to rehearse with the whole choir and the piano player. There were three performances in one day. The first was in the morning for the youngest kids, then we had an afternoon performance for the older kids, and finally, there was an evening performance for the families. I wasn’t nervous for either of the first two performances, but I could feel my heart racing a bit as I got on stage for the evening show. There were probably 250 to 300 people in the audience, making it the biggest “gig” I’ve had in a long time.

Everything went well, and afterward, I volunteered to come back next year and play with them again. I enjoyed the whole experience so much that I purchased my own ukulele the next day and have been having fun learning classic songs like “Brown Eyed Girl” and “Hey Jude.” Below is a video of our performance of “Great Adventure.”

Elise auditions for Chamber Orchestra

Without question, orchestra has been Elise’s favorite class during her first two years of middle school. She takes a lot of pride in representing the orchestra in the ongoing band-versus-orchestra debate over which one is better. She practices her violin regularly, and I’m proud to say she recently received the award for “Best Musician” in her class. This is obviously near and dear to my heart, and it’s been a joy to see one of my kids become so dedicated to playing a stringed instrument.

As her musical journey continues, the next step was auditioning for the school’s chamber orchestra. This is a big deal and not easy to get into. She knew it would be difficult, so she practiced regularly at home to prepare for the audition. There was only one open spot left for violin, but we also knew they needed to fill a couple of viola seats. As it turned out, Elise was accepted and asked to play viola in the chamber orchestra! She hasn’t actually played the viola before, but since she already plays violin, a lot of the technique should carry over. The viola is similar in many ways, though it is tuned lower and will take some getting used to.

Jess and I are both extremely proud of her dedication to music, and we can’t wait to attend her chamber orchestra performances next year!

Summer Softball

Normally, we only play softball during the spring and fall, but this year is a bit different. I was asked to be the assistant coach for Havoc, our league’s summer All Star team, and I was happy to do it. I knew Ava was going to try out, so my only concern was whether she would make the team. I was very confident she would, but we still worked hard to prepare for tryouts. Not only did she make it, but our head coach was so impressed with her play and natural athleticism that she is now our starting shortstop! Her normal position is third base, so it’s not a drastic change, but shortstop is the captain of the infield and comes with more responsibility, so there has been a lot to learn. She has taken it all in stride and already looks like she has been playing there for years, even though she is just getting started.

One of the exciting things about this team is that we’re traveling out of state to play in multiple tournaments. The first one is next week, when we participate in the Utah Summer Games. We’ll be playing games Thursday through Saturday and participating in a parade on Friday night. Unfortunately, Ava and I are going to miss a tournament the following weekend in Arizona because we’ll be up in Washington for Aunt Norma’s 100th birthday. That is more than a worthy reason to be absent from the team. There will be more tournaments and games, both this season and beyond, but 100th birthdays don’t come along often, and we wouldn’t miss it.

This All Star team has been a bigger commitment than we’re used to. During our normal seasons, we have two 90-minute practices per week, plus an hour at the batting cage every weekend. Now we have practices on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights from 6:00 to 9:00, plus an hour at the cage on Friday night. I’m out there in the field running and participating in drills the whole time, and at my age, it adds up. By the time Thursday night comes around, I’m sore and exhausted, but that never stops me from going hard in practice and showing these teenagers that I can still keep up with them. I got on a roll hitting fly balls to them on Wednesday night and ended up hitting five home runs out of the park, which was a personal record. Having the wind blowing out didn’t hurt.

Memorial Day Weekend in Phoenix

Last Friday, the kids finished their school year, and literally a couple of hours later we were on the road, heading down to the Phoenix area so Enzo could play in his second pool tournament, the Arizona State Championship. Enzo’s coach, Sean, who has quickly become a friend to our whole family, joined us for the trip. Sean is focused on building up the youth pool community and really wanted to attend, so we were happy to bring him along.

At the tournament in Nevada the previous month, we had become friends with a couple of families who live in Arizona. One of the dads we met is a real estate guy in Phoenix with a few rental properties, and he was kind enough to give us a great deal on a rental house for the weekend. He ended up taking Sean and me out Friday night for a crazy night of pool at one of his favorite dive bars. It felt like we had walked into a movie scene, with all kinds of characters partying and playing pool. Word quickly got around that “the Vegas players,” Sean and I, were in the house, so we started getting pulled into games right away. It took me a few games to get warmed up, but then I got on a roll and started playing some of the best pool of my life. A couple of Crown Royals didn’t hurt in terms of loosening up, and before long, I was running tables and making shots that got quite a reaction. Considering that I’m mostly the dad, coach, software engineer guy these days, the attention I received that night was a lot of fun.

On Saturday, we all drove across Phoenix to Dozer’s Grill, where the tournament was being held. This was the fifth and final event of the Billiard Education Foundation’s 2026 tournament series, and it had the biggest field of competitors yet. Enzo was nervous and honestly didn’t play to his full potential, but he still took fourth place in the 9-ball event. He easily could have finished third if a couple of shots had gone differently, but it’s all good. He had fun, got to catch up with some friends from the Nevada tournament, and left with a smile on his face. We stuck around afterward because they were giving away a beautiful Balabushka cue stick. Unfortunately, Enzo didn’t win it, but it was still cool to be there for it. Afterward, we all went out to dinner with another family we have become friends with at a Mexican-inspired sushi restaurant that everyone loved.

The next day, we laid low and spent most of the day at the swimming pool. The house we were renting was part of a neighborhood with a beautiful pool and community center, so we took it easy and enjoyed playing in the water. During the drive home on Monday, we talked at length with Sean about his ideas for a youth pool tour and development program. He actually wants to name the tour after Enzo by using his nickname, “No Fear,” in the title, so I’m getting started on building a website to promote it. Sean and Enzo have quickly formed a special relationship, and he is dedicated to Enzo’s success. Over the weekend, I also started an Instagram account so everyone can follow along with Enzo’s journey as a pool player. Just search for enzo.nofear and you’ll find him.

I think Enzo’s game is about to take a huge step forward because tomorrow, we’re getting our own pool table at the house! About a month ago, we decided to convert one of the garage stalls into a game room, so I took on the huge task of emptying everything out, cleaning it up, and painting. I hired a professional to paint the walls and ceiling, then handled the floor treatment myself. Sean was able to get us an amazing deal on the table and equipment, and assuming all goes well, we’ll be playing at home tomorrow night.

The table I bought is a Clash Steel Alumen Pro. The Clash Steel brand isn’t well known in the U.S., but it’s a professional-quality table from Europe that gets incredible reviews. I expect it to be the nicest table I’ve ever played on, and I can’t believe it’s going to be permanently located at our house! You can expect to see plenty of videos of Enzo and me playing on it very soon.

Upcoming Summer Travel

As I’ve mentioned in some of my recent posts, including this one, we have a lot of travel coming up this summer. More than ever, actually. The trip to Phoenix started within hours of the kids’ summer break kicking off, and next up is Ava’s softball tournament in Utah. After that, we’ll be spending a week in the Seattle area visiting family and friends. We’re trying to cram as much into that trip as possible, and the timing is pretty cool because it will be almost five years to the day since we moved away. The kids haven’t been back since then, so this trip is going to be very special for them.

Shortly before Elise’s birthday in mid-July, we’ll be heading down to Arizona for another softball tournament, then after her birthday we’re traveling up to Canada for a week at the Martins’ cabin on Lake Huron. They’ve been doing a lot of work up there to get it ready for visitors, and we’re all excited to check it out. The activity I’m most looking forward to is deepwater salmon fishing. Although I’m not an avid fisherman, I went through a phase around age 12 where I frequently went fishing with my uncles Jim and Bob, so this experience should bring back some good memories.

Shortly after returning from Canada, Jessica and I will be heading to New York for a few days as part of a work trip. We originally thought I’d be going to Boston at the end of June, but things changed, and now it’s going to be Manhattan at the end of July. We’re actually traveling home on the night of my birthday, which makes it even more fun. I’ve only been to New York once, when I was 13, and Jess and I have never been there together, so it should be a great experience. We’ll only be there for about two and a half days, so it will be a quick trip. I’m a bit jealous of Jess because she’ll be able to explore during the day while I’m working, but we’ll make the most of the time we have.

As always, we have a lot to be excited and thankful for. I think this is going to be a summer to remember, and we can’t wait to see everyone on our upcoming trips!

A Visit with Butch and Carol

Between work trips, family visits, and the kids’ activities, October has flown by. With Halloween around the corner and Thanksgiving plans underway, the season is just getting started.

Yesterday we had a nice visit with Uncle Butch and Aunt Carol, who were in Las Vegas for a few days. They were staying downtown, so we met them at their hotel and headed over to 7th and Carson, one of our favorite brunch spots. We hadn’t seen them since moving away from Washington almost four and a half years ago, so the visit felt long overdue. It was great catching up over a relaxed meal, then walking across the street to the Downtown Container Park to enjoy the weather, play cornhole, and watch a little football. They couldn’t believe how much the kids have grown, and it was nice hearing how much they’re enjoying retirement. We made plans to visit them in June when we head up to Washington for Aunt Norma’s 100th birthday. It was so good to see them again, and hopefully it won’t be this long before our next visit.

October has been a full month for all of us, and we still have Halloween to look forward to. It started off on an exciting note for me. On the morning of October 1st, I flew to Boston for a work trip. My company was hosting an “AI Bootcamp” for executives, designed to train them on AI concepts, then split them into teams to build an AI app in a single day and present it that evening. I was invited as one of the trainers and ended up serving as the main grader for the presentations.

It was my first time in Boston, and with only two nights in town, I wanted to make the most of every moment. Both nights, after the work events wrapped up, I went exploring on foot, calling Jessica and the kids so they could see what I was seeing. The first evening, I walked to Fenway Park. The Red Sox were playing the Yankees in New York that night, so the stadium was eerily quiet. I had the rare chance to walk around this historic landmark completely alone, which, for a lifelong baseball fan, was unforgettable.

The next night, I wandered north to Little Italy, taking photos along the way. I’ve never seen so many restaurants packed into one area, and every single one seemed busy. Even the closed ones had TVs on with the Red Sox game playing. I ended up at a great Italian restaurant, enjoying oysters and veal at the bar with a glass of wine while the game played overhead. After dinner, I stopped at Mike’s Pastry for one of their famous cannoli and kept walking through the neighborhood as I ate it. I followed the Freedom Trail back through the city, passing through the park and an old graveyard from the 1600s, where I called the kids again so they could share in the moment.

I was there for less than 48 hours, but Boston left a big impression on me. It’s now one of my favorite cities, and I can’t wait to go back with the family so they can experience it too.

It’s been a great month for the rest of the family, too. Jessica continues to shine at both school and work. Her first round of parent-teacher conferences went really well, and she earned outstanding feedback from her administrators during her first classroom evaluation. This is likely her toughest year yet, balancing teaching full-time while finishing her master’s program, but she’s on track to graduate in May. Once she’s through this stretch, the coming school years will probably feel easy by comparison. For now, she’s handling everything with grace and setting the standard for how to take on such a challenge.

Ava has been having a fantastic month, both at school and on the softball field. She recently earned a Student of the Month award, which made us so proud, and her hard work on the field has turned her into one of the team’s top players. Just a few nights ago, she crushed a line drive to the fence for a triple, and yesterday we spent some time at the batting cages. I must have fed her around fifty pitches from the machine, and she didn’t miss a single one—it was incredible. Elise is also doing great; she recently advanced to the next level in her figure skating class and is loving it. I was especially proud when she told me she’s now the first-chair violinist in her school’s intermediate orchestra. It’s cool having another string musician in the house. Enzo is looking forward to starting another short season of track and field in December. He had such a great time doing it last year, and we’re all excited to see him back out there.

Halloween is just around the corner, and the kids couldn’t be more excited. They love putting on costumes and collecting all the free candy they can. Our friends Jodi and Miles are coming down from Washington to spend the holiday with us, which will make it even more fun. The kids can’t wait to show Miles how great our neighborhood is for trick-or-treating. And since Halloween also happens to be Nana’s birthday, it’s always an extra special day for our family.

Looking ahead to Thanksgiving—my favorite holiday—it’s shaping up to be a full house. Amy and Tom are coming out from Colorado, and Kristy, Tito, and Madi are flying in from Washington to stay with us. With our family of five, that makes ten people under one roof for a few days. On top of that, we’ll have several friends joining us for Thanksgiving dinner. I’m sure it will get a little hectic at times, but it’s bound to be memorable. I’m hoping for a fun, slightly chaotic “Griswold” kind of Thanksgiving—maybe even another Thanksgiving-gate we’ll laugh about for years. Plus, we’ll be celebrating Ava’s 14th birthday that week. I look forward to writing all about it in next month’s post. Until then…

Happy 10th Birthday, Elise!

All about Elise’s 10th birthday, plus updates on how our Summer break is wrapping up, Vegas Showbiz getting into the YouTube Partner Program, and Cappers going live!

Today our sweet Elise turned 10 years old! I still remember the morning she was born like it was yesterday. It was shortly after 6:00 am when Jessica delivered her in a small hot tub at a birth center in Bellevue, Washington. With the music of Elliott Smith playing in the background, Elise was brought into this world and I got to hold her for quite a while shortly after. Obviously, it was an experience that Jessica and I will never forget; it’s just hard to believe that 10 whole years have already gone by since then.

As is usually the case with our kids’ birthdays, we’re spreading the celebration out over several days. Since today is her actual birthday, she started off the morning with breakfast in bed, then came down later in the morning to open presents. We went to a play center in the afternoon to let the kids get some exercise, then we went out to dinner as a family. We let Elise choose the restaurant, and luckily for all of us, she chose Chef Kenny’s, which is an Asian vegan restaurant that we love.

After dinner, we came home and did some night swimming, then took a break to enjoy a cake that Elise and Mom baked last night. More swimming and hot tubbing ensued. All in all, it was a great day, but her birthday celebrations are far from over. Tomorrow, the kids will be going to my Mom’s house for a couple nights and I know she has a few things planned. Then next Thursday our good friends the Palmers are visiting us from Washington for a long weekend.

Instead of having a traditional birthday party, Elise wanted to go see the new Barbie movie in theaters with her friends, but she wanted to wait until her buddy Miles was here for a visit. Jessica got tickets for a big group of Elise’s friends to go to the movie, but Enzo and I decided to pass. I’ll admit it does look funny but since my friend Leon will be here, I think he and I will take Enzo to do something that day while the girls are at the movie.

I know Elise still has all these fun things to come but I hope she enjoyed her day today. It was pretty much the perfect family day and I don’t think anyone will be forgetting it anytime soon. Happy 10th birthday Elise, we love you!!

The Last Few Weeks of Summer Break

Jessica and the kids have been enjoying their break this Summer, but it’s flying by and they will be heading back to school in about three weeks. We’re really excited for our friends to come down for a visit, but they all know that this will basically be the last hoorah. In addition to the movie, we’re all going to a water park one day while they’re here, so that should be a lot of fun.

We recently celebrated the 4th of July, which was also Peach and Spencer’s third birthday, by having my Mom plus our friends Tiko and Tina, plus their two girls, Helen and Beatrice, over for swimming, a BBQ, and fireworks at the park. We were spoiled by relatively cool temperatures during June but that all seems long gone. The forecasted high temperature for this Sunday is 117 degrees, which is extreme even for us. I remember it getting that hot one day during our first Summer here, but it never got that hot last Summer. When you live here you just learn how to live with the extreme heat during the Summer, but at least we always have a pool to go out and jump into.

An Update on Vegas Showbiz and Cappers

Shortly after my last family blog post, Vegas Showbiz was accepted into the YouTube partner program. They recently lowered their limits to get into the first level of the program and we qualified, so I applied and we were accepted almost immediately. Now that we’re in the partner program we’re technically able to start making money, although that hasn’t happened yet. We’re allowed to sell private memberships to our channel but I don’t think that makes sense for us at the moment. We’re also able to accept tips/donations via the Thanks button below our videos, and we’re able to sell Super Stickers, which are digital pieces of art related to our channel.

I don’t expect us to capitalize on any of these options, but I’ve definitely seen an uptick in our viewing numbers and subscribers since we got into the program. It makes sense that YouTube would start surfacing our videos more in searches now that we’re in the partner program, because the better our videos do, the better they do in terms of advertising revenue. Our big goal is still to get to 1,000 subscribers because at that point we will make it to the next level of the partner program, and at that point, you start getting paid a portion of the revenue generated from ads being viewed when people watch your videos.

It won’t be a huge amount of money, but we expect it to be enough to buy tickets to a show each month. Our plan is to reinvest the money into doing more fun things to make videos about and grow the channel that way. Although we had a lull between February and May where we were only producing two videos per month, getting into the partner program has definitely been reinvigorating. We’re not quite halfway through July and have already dropped five new videos for the month. Here’s our most recent one, which is a review Enzo and I made after visiting Fly Over Las Vegas on the Strip.

Regarding Cappers, last Friday Devin and I went live by releasing it to the world! Our main website is located at https://cappers.ai, so if you want to learn more about what we do, that’s the place to go. The web application that people pay for subscriptions to is located at https://app.cappers.ai. So far we don’t have any paying customers but I’ve made some nice progress this week.

Yesterday I messaged about 10 professional sports handicappers on Twitter; I introduced myself and offered them a free Cappers subscription. I explained that I was trying to gather feedback from established handicappers so I can fine-tune the site and asked if they would be interested. I have already heard back from three of them who are interested and one, who has over 56,000 followers on Twitter, has already gotten set up with a free subscription. Another one has 35,000 subscribers, so if I can get these guys to tweet about it, give feedback, and perhaps give a testimonial on our site, we’ll be looking good.

Our main goal for these first couple of months is to get feedback so we’re ready for NFL season. Hopefully working with these established handicappers will help get us there. In addition to promoting the site via Twitter, I have also been making videos for the Cappers YouTube channel and writing blog posts for the Cappers blog. Most of the blog posts I have written are heavily focused on sports betting, but my first one was more like our origination story. I wrote about growing up in a house where my Dad ran an illegal sports gambling operation, and how he always told me to do something better with my life. I honestly feel like my tech experience combined with these experiences as a child makes me very qualified to be a founder of a company like this. If you’d like to check it out just go to: https://cappers.ai/blog/2023/07-july/01-commandments-of-sports-betting

I’m already working every day to get us ready for NFL season and I expect to be hustling for months to help build up our subscriber base. Devin and I should be starting our Vegas sports podcast soon as well, so hopefully all these things will start coming together and the site will blow up. I’m not worried about it because I know how much hard work is being done; it’s just a matter of time.

More Homemade Music

I’ve been on a roll with content creation lately and music has been no exception. I recently tried something new by recording music specifically to be used for the background of a Vegas Showbiz video. Normally, when I record music I’m trying to come up with progressive, interesting ideas and play things that sound impressive. This time, it was a different approach because I wanted something simple with an uplifting feel to it.

I was particularly proud of this one, not because it was the best playing I’ve done, but because I recorded it in an old-school way using my actual amplifiers and microphones. Normally when I’m recording music at home, I plug my guitar into my computer and use software recreations of classic amplifiers. This approach has always worked well and sounded good, but it almost feels like you’re cheating. I’m able to pick from all these classic amps from the 50’s 60’s and 70’s, then mix and match them as I please.

This time, I set up a couple of amplifiers in my bedroom closet, which is the closest thing I have to a recording booth, then mic’d them up and cranked the volume. The music was intentionally simple but the guitar solo was done in a single take with zero practice or preparation. In a strange way I was more proud of this than most of my other stuff, mostly because I was using my own physical amps and pedals to get all the sounds.

I also promised my Uncle Bob that I would make a video with the guitar he gifted me before moving back to Washington, so here it is. Again, I used a microphone in front of an amp with lots of volume, which I think is good for the soul. Playing loud feels so good!

Obviously, it’s been a busy few weeks but I honestly believe that staying busy is the secret to happiness. I’m looking forward to making more music to use in our videos, excited for the future of Vegas Showbiz on YouTube, and extremely excited about everything going on with Cappers. It’s only a matter of time. For now, here are a few more recent photos from our Summer.

Visiting the Vegas Strip with Avery
Our good friend and old neighbor Avery recently came down from Washington for a visit. It was a fun couple of days.
Fun times with our friend Avery
